Biography

Toby Harris qualified as a solicitor in 1971 and for nearly 30 years practised as such in provincial firms in England, specialising in tax and trust work from about 1985.  He established this practice in 1996 to help private individuals and their advisers with difficult cases.

He now practises, not as a solicitor, but as a Chartered Tax Adviser and Registered Trust and Estate Practitioner.  He wrote the first five editions of ‘Business and Agricultural Property Relief’ (Bloomsbury Professional) and worked on many other titles for Bloomsbury and other publishers.  He was the original author of, and examiner for, the STEP Diploma for England and Wales in the Taxation of Trusts and Estates.  With Martyn Frost he created the STEP course that has become the STEP Advanced Course in Will Writing.

Toby’s practice has included high-profile cases on relief from taxation and high-level litigation in relation to the administration of estates.  He is regularly asked to advise on the relief from Inheritance Tax available to businesses and farms.
